Il Portico di San Donato: A Hidden Gem in Bologna

In the need for a cheap and cheerful, but generously caloric meal after the long trek to Santuario Madonna di San Luca, we found the wonderful Il Portico di San Donato in our neighborhood. The hospitality was lovely and the main owner/manager of the restaurant didn’t speak English, but his warmth was felt during our entire visit, including a gorgeous pistachio liqueur on our way out.

The dough was terrific, bouncy and wonderfully chewy, absolute perfection! If classic dough isn’t your bag, there’s a menu of them including gluten-free and charcoal. The restaurant has a rather creative pizza menu, but due to my need to “when in Rome” most of the time, I opted for the Bologna classic of mortadella, burrata, and pistachio. It was so very good and just looking at this photo makes me want to lick the screen.

The Husband went for the Maria which included sausage, wilted greens, and sundried tomatoes and found himself equally impressed with his pie. It’s Friday night as I write this my other tabs are driving directions back to Il Portico di San Donato.
