Becker’s Hannover: A Lackluster Birthday Dinner

I’ve become a bit obsessed in checking the Michelin app ahead of any travel and in this instance planning birthday celebrations. It’s not the stars I’m after these days, because, well, budgets, but it’s this other category, Bib Gourmand, where excellent quality, high value meals are honored. Take a look for Bibendum’s head on the app to find these gems.

That’s precisely how I found Becker’s for The Husband’s birthday dinner. On Saturday night, the place was absolutely packed when we arrived, though we were treated to a key corner booth with a view of the street below, complete with arriving wedding party, and bustling bar scene.

We tried the Bloody Mary and a few simpler oysters to start. While they were very nice, their price tag at 6 EUR each seemed a bit more exorbanant than Bibendum would suggest.

We also shared the octopus starter, which was crispy and delicious, though quite small for sharing. Absolutely be sure to order your own.

Finally, for mains we both opted for the schnitzel since it received excellent accolades online. Sadly, we were both a bit disappointed with the somewhat bland and very bready creation. It was fun that it was served with choice of potato and salad, but if I were to return, this absolutely would not make the order again.

For birthday dessert, they sadly seemed out of several items, so we parted on terms with a quick coffee and macaron which felt a little lacking for a celebration.

Would I run back here? No. But, I’d like the chance to order again and find Bibendum’s sweet spot on the menu.
