This past weekend we decided to check out a new village which meant a new funny Swiss locals bar followed by dinner at Vesuvio Pizzeria. The restaurant is fairly non descript and won’t be the most romantic date night you’ve ever had, but the staff is friendly and the food is incredible! Plus, who doesn’t love a pizza master with enough humor to turn himself into a charming cartoon?

This was either a good sales tactic or just true, but after we were seated it was explained that there were a LOT of pizzas ahead of us so we should expect to wait about 45 minutes for ours. Order an appetizer our waitress urged. Rather than ordering something sensible, like a non pizza-adjacent dish, we doubled down and shared this insane fried pizza dough served with ham and tomatoes. Crunchy pillows of caloric excellence had me not for one second regretting the 1.5 hour hike of earlier that afternoon. While the look….like something else…this is some serious death row dish for me.

More wonderful dough greeted us as mains. The Gentleman chose a truffle infused, sausage and buratta laden creation adorned with edible carnations. Well, he assumed as much and proceeded to try one. He claimed to be full for two days after! I enjoyed a Datterino based sauce topped with my favorite, strachiatella cheese, a bit of sausage, and sun-dried tomatoes. I managed about half of mine and regret not one calorie.

A walk to the train was quite welcome and we left feeling fat and happy, already looking forward to our next visit to Pizzeria Vesuvio.
