On our way to cross the channel, we found a crash pad in Gravelines and enjoyed a French dinner to break up the long journey. Situated, just a twenty minute walk from Petit-Fort-Philippe, a stone’s throw from Calais, a lovely meander will lead you to a simplistic looking house that is L’eclusier.

A large terrace is the perfect venue to catch the sun set over the canal, while you slurp oysters and sip some bubbles. A plate of octopus carpaccio, laden with citrus will have you feeling a summery burst of energy before the sun slips behind the rocks opposite.

While the restaurant offers an extensive menu, we both opted for the Butcher’s cut of the day, in this case a faux filet. Completed with frites, salad, and a sauce of choice, Bearnaise for me, Chorizo for him, your indulgent French cravings are all satisfied and complete.

Oh, of course, unless if you’re waiting for dessert, in which there are plenty. We opted to share a carmely chocolately creation which was lovely to look at, but sadly was not as tasty as its price tag would hope.
