The Ultimate Hanover Beef & Reef Experience: What to Order

Beef & Reef has to be the best/worst restaurant name ever, yet I was intrigued enough to try it, especially after the rave reviews. We were after a steak out on the town, something that is virtually unaffordable in Switzerland, so this felt like a lucky date night. Here for the beef, skip the reef.

The very springy, soft bread with a cheesy spread was a real treat ahead of a late dinner, not just your average stale baguette! The French onion soup was just OK, rather thin and felt like they’d chucked it together just because we’d ordered it, not because it had been simmering for some time or a special of the restaurant. Although, I suppose soup is neither beef or reef.

I had the smallest filet, 200g, and enjoyed it with the herb butter (oddly situated on salad) that came with all orders and delicious parmesan fries that I had with a truffle mayo. This was a real indulgent meal and I was here for it.

For dessert we shared the apple strudel, which was more a of a strange brioche and a real disappointment. The pine nut ice cream and fresh berries were a welcome treat!

Our waiter was beyond kind, helpful, and a real joy just to talk to. You could tell he (and his colleague) enjoyed their jobs and they gave us the service and banter that felt like you were in a friend’s home. What a fun evening; I’m already planning my next trip back!
